Investing in family and community support programs rather than institutional care

Research on behalf of the Lumos Foundation in Haiti and the Elevate Children Funders Group in Nepal “shows that despite powerful evidence of the negative impact of orphanage care, private donors continue to provide large amounts of funding to orphanages through donations, volunteer tourism, mission trips and other forms of fundraising.”

This adds to the pull factors that allow more vulnerable children to be taken away from their communities and families and into institutional care. Donors and policymakers can do more to help vulnerable children by investing in family and community support programs rather than institutional care.

The Elevate Children Funders Group has developed infographics, policy briefs and social media cards on this topic. These unbranded resources can serve as advocacy tools to help shift resources and funding flows from orphanages to family and community-based care.
